Trex Deck vs Wood Deck: Which Is Better for Utah Weather?
A deck adds a whole outdoor room to your home for the warm half of the year. If you are planning one in Bountiful or anywhere along the Wasatch Front, the first big choice is the material: a Trex composite deck or a traditional wood deck. Both are good options. Here is how they compare so you can pick the right one.
How Utah weather treats a deck
Utah is hard on outdoor wood. Our summers are hot and dry, and the sun bakes the surface. Our winters bring snow, ice, and the freeze-and-thaw cycle that splits and warps boards over time. Whatever you build, it has to stand up to both extremes.
Wood decks
A wood deck costs less to build up front. It looks natural and warm, and many people love the real-wood feel.
The trade-off is upkeep. To fight the Utah sun and snow, a wood deck needs to be cleaned, sanded, and sealed or stained every year or two. Skip that, and the boards gray out, crack, and splinter faster. If you do not mind the yearly work, wood is a solid choice.
Trex composite decks
Trex is a composite board made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic. It is built to handle weather without splitting, warping, or fading much. This is why Trex decks are our specialty.
The big win is almost no upkeep. You do not sand, seal, or stain a Trex deck. A wash now and then keeps it looking good. It holds its color for years, even in strong sun. The trade-off is a higher cost up front than wood.
Which should you choose?
It comes down to two questions: how much do you want to spend at the start, and how much upkeep do you want to do later?
- Choose wood if you want the lowest up-front cost and do not mind yearly maintenance.
- Choose Trex if you want to spend a little more now and skip the yearly work for a deck that stays looking new.
Either way, a deck is only as safe as the frame under it, so proper footings and framing matter more than the boards on top. We handle all of it.
